The Party Animal.
The thing about Party Animals is that they are not technically animals, although many of them do shed, bite, and occasionally attempt to mark territory!
A Party Animal is that one person at every gathering who arrives with the energy of a caffeinated squirrel and leaves only after the police, the neighbours, and possibly the fire brigade have all made cameo appearances.I’ve known several Party Animals in my life, and they all share certain traits. First, they possess an unshakeable belief that any object can be used as a hat. Lampshades, salad bowls, traffic cones, a small dog if it fits on the head, it’s fashion. Second, they believe gravity is optional. A Party Animal will climb things. They don’t know why. They don’t plan it. They simply see a bookshelf and think, “Yes. Up.”The Party Animal also has a supernatural ability to locate music. You can be in a silent room, no speakers, no radio, nothing plugged in, and suddenly they’re dancing to something only they can hear. Scientists should study this, but scientists are too busy doing sensible things like curing diseases and avoiding Party Animals.
Now, the Party Animal is not necessarily the drunkest person at the party. In fact, many Party Animals are stone-cold sober. They simply operate at a frequency the rest of us cannot perceive without special equipment or possibly medication. They are powered by pure chaos, like a toddler who has just discovered sugar and stairs.A classic Party Animal move is the Grand Entrance. This usually involves bursting through a door with the confidence of someone who has never once read a safety manual. They will shout something like “LET’S MAKE MEMORIES!” which is Party Animal code for “Someone will lose a shoe tonight.” They will then immediately spill a drink, knock over a decorative item, and greet the host with a hug so powerful it rearranges internal organs.Another signature behaviour is the Ill-Advised Dance Move. This is when the Party Animal attempts choreography that has not been approved by any governing body. It often involves limbs moving in directions not recommended by orthopaedic surgeons. The Party Animal will insist they are “nailing it,” even as furniture flees the room for its own protection.
But the true hallmark of the Party Animal is the Morning After. This is when they awaken in a location that defies logic. A bathtub. A shed. A neighbour’s trampoline. They will emerge wearing someone else’s shoes, clutching a half-eaten sausage roll, and asking questions like “Why is there glitter in my ears?” They will then swear they are “never drinking again,” a statement with the same credibility as a politician promising to lower taxes.Despite all this, we love the Party Animal. They bring life, chaos, and unforgettable stories. Without them, parties would be polite gatherings where people discuss weather patterns and mortgage rates. With them, parties become legendary events that future generations will speak of in hushed tones. So here’s to the Party Animal: the human hurricane, the chaos ambassador, the reason the carpet needs replacing.
May they continue to dance, spill, shout, climb, fall, rise, and most importantly make every party feel like the world’s most unpredictable wildlife documentary.
