Instruction Manuals.
Instruction manuals are the sworn enemies of human sanity. They pretend to be helpful documents, but deep down they know they’re lying!
Their true purpose is to take a perfectly ordinary person and turn them into a muttering, screwdriver‑wielding gremlin who hasn’t slept in three days and is now questioning the very concept of “parts.”The first thing you meet is the Quick Start Guide, which is neither quick nor a start. It’s a flimsy scrap of paper containing four diagrams that look like they were drawn by a prehistoric accountant. These diagrams show shapes that do not exist in nature, labelled A, B, and C, with arrows pointing in directions that defy physics. The guide claims this is all you need to “get going,” which is true only if your goal is to get going straight to the pub!
Then you find the full instruction manual, which is thicker than a family Bible and printed in a font so small it can only be read by owls. It has been translated into 19 languages, including one that appears to be a form of English spoken exclusively by malfunctioning robots. It contains sentences like: “Ensure the ergonomic flange is aligned with the rotational housing before initiating compliance.” You don’t know what this means. You suspect nobody knows what this means. Even the person who wrote it probably died of confusion.Next come the safety warnings, which are written by lawyers who clearly believe you are moments away from catastrophic self‑destruction. They say things like: “WARNING: Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury, death, or mild disappointment.” They also warn you not to use the product near water, electricity, heat, cold, pets, children, adults, or any known form of matter.
Eventually you reach the classic step: “Locate Part A.” This sounds simple. It is not. Part A is never in the box. Part A is under the sofa, behind the radiator, or in the mouth of your cat, who has decided it is now a chewable lifestyle choice. When you finally retrieve it, you discover that Part A looks nothing like the drawing. The drawing shows a sleek, elegant component. The actual Part A looks like a rejected prototype from a tractor factory. Then comes the moment of truth: “Insert Tab B into Slot C.” This is where your remaining optimism dies. Tab B is twice the size of Slot C. Slot C is shaped like a lemon. You try to force it, because the manual insists this should work. Something snaps. You are now holding two broken pieces and wondering whether the product will still function if you glue it together with despair.
In desperation, you turn to the troubleshooting section, which offers advice such as: “If the device does not operate, ensure it is plugged in.” This is extremely helpful if you are the sort of person who regularly forgets to plug things in and also possibly to remain conscious. Finally, you call customer support. You speak to a cheerful person named Steve, who is definitely not named Steve and definitely not located anywhere near you. Steve asks if you have tried rebooting the device, even though the device is a wooden bookshelf.By the end, you have learned patience, humility, and several new swear words. Instruction manuals are not guides.
They are psychological obstacle courses designed to remind you that you are a fragile creature who should never attempt to assemble anything more complicated than a sandwich.
