Adults: The Pop-Up Ads of Life.
They say, “We’re not trying to make your life harder.” Really? Then why does every “helpful” adult sound like a malfunctioning GPS? “Turn left at regret, merge onto disappointment, and continue straight until you hit a wall of student debt.”
And they love that word 'listen'. Oh, they’re big on listening. “You need to learn to listen.” Listen to what? Your unsolicited TED Talk on how “back in my day we walked uphill both ways”? You didn’t walk uphill—you just forgot where you parked!
Sometimes they’re trying to do something nice, they say. Like what? Like giving you advice you didn’t ask for, about a problem you don’t have, in a tone that makes you want to fake your own death and move to Belgium?
The truth is: adults aren’t evil. They’re just tired. Tired of pretending they know what they’re doing. Tired of explaining why the printer won’t work. Tired of being the human version of a Terms & Conditions page long, confusing, and nobody reads them.
So yeah, maybe they’re trying to help. But help shouldn’t feel like a root canal performed by a motivational speaker. If you really wanna help, skip the lecture, hand me a beer, and tell me I’m doing fine. That’s the kind of adult I’ll listen to.
Because listening’s important, sure. But so is knowing when to hit mute and enjoy the silence.
