Don't ever remove a fence.

"Don’t ever remove a fence until you know the reason it was put there.”
Philosophical advice, or just something your nan said after the incident with a goat?

According to experts who probably wear glasses and have jobs, fences are like metaphors you can stub your toe on. They’re there for a reason, even if that reason is just “Keith from number 12 doesn’t understand boundaries.”

In history, fences have been used to keep things in, keep things out, and occasionally to support a very confused cow. The Great Wall of China is technically a massive fence, and that stopped the Mongols, which is impressive considering they had horses and probably very strong opinions.

If you remove a fence without knowing why it’s there, you could unleash chaos. Like opening a cursed tomb, but with more passive-aggressive neighbours. Suddenly you’ve got ferrets in your conservatory and Carol from the parish council is writing strongly worded emails.

So next time you see a fence, don’t just think “I could remove that.” Think “What if this is the only thing stopping the apocalypse?”
